Edinburgh Toon Picters by Martin Berg, curated by Elizaveta Maltseva was the second exhibition to launch at Rokeby Gallery and took the audience on another international adventure. The title Toon Picters translates from Scottish to mean city photos and is exactly what the exhibition showcased.
Edinburgh Toon Picters was the first Australian exhibition by Edinburgh based photographer Martin Berg. Following the photographer's work for many years now, the curator saw it was time to bring Martin's work out of the commercial sector and into the light of the gallery context.
Martin depicts the seemingly grey and broody city while capturing it’s warm, quaint and whimsical charm. He frames his images to include as few people as possible, allowing the city to remain the central character. He photographs windows from outside and inside, offering as much insight by presenting one lonely chair as he does with a saturated cityscape. His images are equal parts voyeuristic and naive explorations.
Martin's photographs take the audience on a slow, walking journey through the streets of Edinburgh. This exhibition is an atmospheric, gentle, and subtle exploration of a city that is romantic and charming.
